Bank Safety

The District Attorney advises the public to take the following precautions at banks and ATMs:

  • Be aware and vigilant of surroundings.
  • Do not become distracted by your cellphone or other devices.
  • Trust your instincts: If something appears suspicious, leave the location or call 911.
  • Park in well-lit areas, close to entrances of the location you are visiting or close to heavy foot traffic.
  • Check in with elderly community members and accompany them to the bank.
  • Lock your vehicle’s doors as soon as you enter it.
  • If being followed, call 911 or drive to the nearest police station.
  • Maintain a low profile by avoiding carrying large bags, avoiding wearing expensive jewelry, or displaying large amounts of cash in public.
  • Be aware of distraction tactics and be wary of strangers who approach to engage in conversation to compliment attire or jewelry; approach as you enter or exit your car and offer to inspect your vehicle for mechanical defects; or come to your home requesting access to perform an inspection or service on behalf of city or other governmental agencies unless you have called them, or their visit is verified as legitimate.
