June 10, 2016: Patients Can Get Dinged in Phantom Billing Scam

Medical Billing Scam graphic

Unsuspecting patients can lose valuable benefits when medical providers charge for unnecessary procedures.

In the phantom billing scam, patients are billed for services never performed and sent an explanation of benefits that are usually discarded. Without notice from patients, insurers may be unaware they are being defrauded.

Although insurance companies are left footing the bill, patients can have their insurance limits and caps lowered as well as being at risk for not qualifying for future medical procedures.

TIPS:

  • Review any paperwork sent by insurance companies
  • If you were billed for unnecessary services, immediately report the discrepancy
