A man has been charged with stealing a pickup truck and shortly after crashing into a vehicle, killing that driver, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Deputy District Attorney Katharine Yaske said Isaiah Lono aka Isaiah Portillo (dob 7/8/01) of Hawthorne faces one count each of murder, fleeing from the scene of a fatal collision, grand theft of a 2018 Dodge Ram 3500 and three misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage and one misdemeanor count of driving when privilege suspended or revoked.

Lono pleaded not guilty to the charges yesterday and is scheduled to return on September 15 in Department 4 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

On August 29, the defendant is charged with stealing a truck from outside an auto shop and then speeding and crashing into several vehicles, the prosecutor said. Lono allegedly ran a red light before crashing into Angelica Gonzalez, 30, who was driving near Redondo Beach Boulevard and Vermont Avenue in Gardena, the prosecutor added.

The defendant reportedly fled the scene but was surrounded by good Samaritans while police arrived.

Bail is set at $2 million. The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 18 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

Case YA102467 remains under investigation by the Gardena Police Department.
