LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced today that Jose Daniel Amaya, 27, is charged with five counts of attempted murder, including five gun sentencing enhancements, in the shooting of four men and one woman near MacArthur Park on January 22 in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

"Gun violence continues to be a devastating scourge in Los Angeles, and today my office has taken decisive action by filing five gun sentencing enhancements, one for each victim,” said District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “These enhancements carry an additional penalty of 25 years to life in prison. This is a clear and unequivocal message: gun violence will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County.”

Jose Daniel Amaya (DOB 9/3/97) is charged in case 25CJCF00406 with five counts of willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder. It is further alleged he used a handgun in the commission of the offenses and caused great bodily injury to each of the victims; and that Amaya has at least two prior felony convictions under California’s Three Strikes Law.

On January 22, at approximately 12:40 a.m., Amaya allegedly fired multiple shots into a group of individuals near Wilshire Boulevard and S. Alvarado Street, striking four men and one woman. Amaya was arrested the same day by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arraignment is scheduled for today in Dept. 30 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

The People recommended the court set bail at $8 million.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of multiple life terms in prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney David Richman of LADA’s Central Trials 15 Division and investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The charges filed in this case are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
