CORRECTION: Fixes the date of the incident.

A man has been charged with leading police in a vehicle pursuit with his 11-month-old daughter aboard, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Michael Callender (dob 10/13/90) of Los Angeles faces one felony count each of assault with a deadly weapon, a car; child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death; and fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly.

Case BA487224 was filed yesterday and also charges Callender with one misdemeanor count of battery on girlfriend or child’s parent.

Arraignment was continued to May 28 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

On May 12, the defendant allegedly took his daughter from her mother and almost ran the woman over as she tried to prevent him from leaving with the child, prosecutors said. Police initiated a pursuit in East Los Angeles and it ended with the safe surrender of the toddler in South Los Angeles, prosecutors added.

Bail is set at $100,000. Callender faces a possible maximum sentence of more than eight years in state prison if convicted as charged.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, East Los Angeles Station.
