A woman was charged today with abusing her dog in her home near Lancaster, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Ani Bailey said Desiree Lenore Martinez, 41 (dob 9/14/72), is charged with two counts each of cruelty to an animal with the allegations that she used a rock and shoe laces as deadly and dangerous weapons.

Martinez pleaded not guilty at arraignment today in case PA079674 in Department 130 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, San Fernando Branch. She is scheduled back in court for a pretrial hearing on Feb. 24 in Department S.

Martinez was arrested on Feb. 10 after her pit bull mix was found hardly able to move with injuries to its head and eyes.

If convicted as charged she faces four years in state prison. The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is providing medical treatment for the dog. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Santa Clarita Station, is investigating the case.
