Two men were charged late yesterday in connection with a high speed auto collision that resulted in a passenger’s death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Jose Flavio Diaz, 24 (dob 1/22/90), of Montebello, and Angel Rojo, 24 (dob 2/16/90), of Covina, are charged in case KA105000 with one count each of murder and one count of second-degree robbery.

The men were scheduled to be arraigned yesterday but the hearing was continued to April 9 in Department F of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pomona Branch. Their bail was set at $1 million.

The felony complaint includes an allegation that Rojo was convicted last year of assault with a deadly weapon or force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Prosecutors said on March 8 several men, including Diaz and Rojo, were partying at a West Covina apartment complex just before robbing a woman and fleeing the scene.

The defendants drove away with their friend, Manuel Ernesto Rodriguez, and traveled at high speeds on city streets, prosecutors said.

Ultimately, Diaz crashed into a tree, killing Rodriguez, prosecutors said. Rojo allegedly ran away from the scene, but Diaz remained at the crash site and was arrested by police. Rojo was apprehended by authorities later the same evening.

If convicted as charged, the two defendants face a maximum sentence of life in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the West Covina Police Department.
