A West Covina councilman pleaded not guilty today to driving under the influence and crashing his car in June, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Michael Herman Spence (dob 7/17/66) has been charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a drug in case 6WC07078. Spence’s attorney stood in for him and gave the plea at this morning’s hearing.

Prosecutors said on June 12 the defendant was allegedly driving under the influence of a drug when he struck a pole with his vehicle near Azusa Avenue and Cypress Street in Covina.

Spence is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 7 for a pretrial hearing in Department 10 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, West Covina Branch.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of six months in county jail.

The case is being investigated by the Covina Police Department.
