A 41-year-old man was charged today with the murder of his estranged wife 13 years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Carl Dennis Mayes (dob 12/16/77) of San Pedro faces one count each of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Case NA112863 includes allegations that Mayes personally and intentionally used a handgun causing great bodily injury or death.

Arraignment is scheduled today in Department S01 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

On July 14, 2006, Mayes allegedly killed Tyquesha Myers, 20, and a day later reported her missing, prosecutors said. Her body was found that day alongside the 710 Freeway in Long Beach, prosecutors added.

Mayes faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 50 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged. Bail is scheduled at more than $3 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Long Beach Police Department.
