A 25-year-old man pleaded no contest today for killing the mother of their 9-month-old baby at a Redondo Beach home three years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Tillson said Roy Peña Rodriguez Jr. of Redondo Beach entered the plea to one count of first-degree murder in case YA092863.

Rodriguez also admitted allegations of acting willfully, deliberately and with premeditation as well as using a gun in the killing.

Victim impact statements are scheduled for Nov. 26 in Department F of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch. Rodriguez will face a 35 years-to-life sentence at a hearing scheduled for Feb. 27, 2019.

On Aug. 12, 2015, the defendant shot Paige Chiarello, 21, in the head during a domestic dispute at her grandfather’s home, the prosecutor said. When the grandfather attempted to help his granddaughter and great-grandson who was in the same room, Rodriguez threatened him, the prosecutor added.

The grandfather managed to call 911 and the defendant was arrested following a short standoff with police, the prosecutor said. The victim died at a hospital the next day.

The case was investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department.
