A Redondo Beach neurologist was sentenced today for selling powerful painkillers to undercover police officers three years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Gerard Goryl, 61, was sentenced to seven years in state prison to be served in county jail. In December 2016, Goryl pleaded no contest to 38 counts, including illegally prescribing a controlled substance and possession for sale of a controlled substance.

Deputy District Attorneys Emily Street and Ryan Dibble of the Major Narcotics Division prosecuted the case.

Goryl ran a medical clinic in Redondo Beach with his 69-year-old assistant and co-defendant Wilfred Arvizo Jr. Over a two-month period in 2014, both men allegedly sold hydrocodone and Xanax to undercover officers. The drugs were sold without any type of physical examination or medical need.

Arvizo faces six similar counts and is scheduled to return to court on June 16. If convicted of all counts, he faces up to eight years and four months in state prison.

Case BA425289 was investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
