A 30-year-old man has pleaded no contest to fatally bludgeoning his parents five years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Jonathan Mercado entered his plea yesterday to two counts of murder and admitted the special allegations of using a deadly and dangerous weapon. He will be sentenced to 42 years to life in state prison on Jan. 17.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Solomons prosecuted the case.

On Sept. 7, 2012, Mercado brutally beat his father, Alexandro Mercado, and his mother, Veronica Mercado, at the family home in the 8100 block of Radford Avenue in North Hollywood.

Mercado, who lived with his parents and two younger siblings, wrapped his mother’s body in a sheet and placed her in a pickup truck that was found by police in Sun Valley. Soon after, authorities went to the home and found the father’s body also wrapped in a sheet.

Case LA071957 was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.
