A man was found guilty today for the slaying of his girlfriend two years ago in Long Beach, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Jurors deliberated several hours before finding 51-year-old Jeffrey Lee Dixon guilty of second-degree murder. The jury also found true a weapon allegation.

Dixon is set to return to Los Angeles County Superior Court in Long Beach on April 24 for sentencing when he faces up to 51 years to life in state prison.

Deputy District Attorney Lee Ashley Cernok said Dixon strangled his girlfriend, Monique Diane Burton, with a belt and electrical cord on April 30, 2012. Dixon then dug a hole in the garage to hide her body, but he was interrupted, the prosecutor said. Her body was later found in his apartment.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
