A man has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend’s male friend last summer in Torrance, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Paul George Gebert (dob 12/4/85) was charged in case BA476251 with one felony count each of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury. The case was filed for warrant on March 21.

He pleaded not guilty today to the charges and is expected to return on April 30 for a preliminary hearing setting in Department 33 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Deputy District Attorney William Chung of the Justice System Integrity Division is prosecuting the case.

On July 8, 2018, Gebert, an officer with the Irvine Police Department, was off-duty at the time he went to his girlfriend’s home in Torrance. When he went inside, he saw a man on the couch and allegedly started beating him. The man, who suffered serious injuries, was a friend of Gebert’s girlfriend.

If convicted as charged, Gebert faces a possible maximum sentence of seven years in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Torrance Police Department.
