October 17, 2018: Man Charged with Fatal Stabbing of Homeless Victim

A 34-year-old Los Angeles man has been charged with the stabbing death of a homeless victim in Hollywood, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Spencer Jay Doland (dob 1/4/84) is charged in case BA472225 with one count of murder with a special allegation of personal use of a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife.

The defendant was expected to be arraigned this afternoon in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center but the hearing was continued to Oct. 31.

Prosecutors said, in the early morning hours of Oct. 11, victim Daryl Hanson exchanged words with the defendant’s girlfriend who was sitting in a car outside a liquor store.

When the defendant returned to his vehicle, the victim was gone but Doland went on to follow him into a back alley in the 7500 block of Sunset Boulevard where the alleged stabbing took place, prosecutors said.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison. Prosecutors have recommended that Doland’s bail be set at $2.02 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, West Bureau.
