A 49-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy as she was trying to detain him last month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Christian Richard Ferrini (dob 5/16/67) of Hacienda Heights has been charged with one felony count of assault upon a peace officer in case KA114279.

The felony complaint alleges that the defendant has been previously convicted of burglary in 1986, evading an officer, willful disregard in 1996, petty theft in 1990 and 2010, and grand theft in 2010 and 2011.

Ferrini pleaded not guilty yesterday and is scheduled to return Feb. 2 to Department 4 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, West Covina Branch.

Prosecutors said on Dec. 22, 2016, a sheriff’s deputy was investigating a theft at a store in the 17100 block of Gale Avenue in the City of Industry.

While canvassing the area, the deputy reportedly saw Ferrini crouching near a car in the store’s parking lot, prosecutors said. When the deputy approached Ferrini and asked him to put his hands up, the defendant allegedly ran to his car, put the vehicle into reverse and almost hit the deputy, prosecutors added. The deputy’s patrol car sustained damage.

Following the incident, Ferrini fled the scene, but was apprehended less than two weeks later, according to prosecutors.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of 13 years in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
