A 21-year-old gang member was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison for killing a man and injuring another at a gas station in Redondo Beach, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Deputy District Attorney Keith Koyano of the Hardcore Gang Division said Erik Martinez of Lawndale pleaded no contest yesterday to one count of murder and one count of attempted murder in case YA094350.

The defendant also admitted to using a handgun in the murder and attempted murder, and to committing the crimes in association with a criminal street gang.

On June 16, 2016, after a gang-related altercation, the defendant fatally shot Mike Cortez, 19, of Lawndale, at a gas station on the corner of Inglewood and Marine avenues, the prosecutor said. Martinez shot the surviving victim in the stomach, the prosecutor added.

The case was investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department.
