January 6, 2014: Ex-Felons Charged in “Door-Knob Burglary” Scheduled to be Arraigned

Two men charged with the burglary of a Cerritos home are scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Dayvonte Marquis Smith, 23 (dob 10/01/1998), and Quintin De Andre Moreland, 25 (dob 11/20/1988), are expected to appear in Department 3 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Norwalk Branch in case VA133298.

Smith and Moreland are each charged with one count of first-degree burglary, person present. Both men have previous convictions: Smith for assault with a firearm and Moreland for receiving stolen property and evading an officer, willful disregard.

Deputy District Attorney Kevin Young said on Jan. 2 at about 11 a.m., the home owner was with her two children when she heard a loud knocking on the door. The victim peered through the window and allegedly saw Smith at her doorstep.

Young said that victim became scared and took her children to a bedroom, locked the door and called police. While the victim was on the phone with authorities, Moreland allegedly kicked in the back door.

When police arrived, the defendants allegedly attempted to flee in a truck. As they tried to escape, the two men crashed the vehicle and were arrested by police, the prosecutor said.

Smith and Moreland remain in custody. Bail for Smith is recommended at $150,000 and $60,000 for co-defendant Moreland. If convicted as charged, Smith faces a minimum of 17 years in state prison, while Moreland could face a maximum of seven years in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
