A 69-year-old man was sentenced today to 35 years to life in state prison for killing his wife of more than 40 years when she served him with divorce papers, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Abigail Baron said Benjamin Christino Ramirez of Carson was convicted on Sept. 10 of one count of first-degree murder with allegations of using a handgun.

On Oct. 5, 2018, Fely Ramirez, 67, served her husband with divorce papers and remained at their home to talk, the prosecutor said. The defendant shot the victim in the chest and head and left the home, according to evidence presented at the trial. Her family discovered her body later that day.

Case TA147299 was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
