A 31-year-old woman was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in state prison for actions that led to her 11-month-old child’s death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

At Monday’s court appearance, Charissa Ranee Bailey of Long Beach pleaded no contest to one felony count of willful cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily injury in case NA098679.

Additionally, the defendant admitted a special allegation that she personally inflicted great bodily injury on a child under the age of five.

The defendant was immediately sentenced after the plea.

Deputy District Attorney Troy Davis of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case, said at the time of the crime the defendant was a drug addict.

On April 24, 2013, Bailey received a week’s supply of methadone from a clinic and was told to keep the drug in a locked container away from children, according to the prosecutor.

The next day, Bailey’s 11-month-old daughter was found dead from a methadone overdose, the prosecutor added.

According to testimony given at the preliminary hearing, the defendant gave the child methadone to soothe the child.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
