July 10, 2015: Don't Pay Up, Hang Up on Utility Scam

Don’t Pay Up, Hang Up on Utility Scam

En Español

Electricity bills are bound to swell as air conditioning units and pool heaters provide some relief this summer.

Swindlers will be calling, claiming to represent a utility company. They tell customers their bill is overdue and threaten to shut off the power or water unless the debt is paid. They will have a person’s name, address and possibly an account number to create a convincing sham.

The callers then tell customers they must get a prepaid debit card to ensure service isn't interrupted. Customers call the thieves back and provide the card information.

TIPS:

  • Utility companies will not contact customers by phone asking for payment or use high-pressure tactics.
  • No utility company will require customers to pay a bill by any unusual means.
  • Be sure to ask for the caller’s name, department and business phone number.
  • Report any suspicious calls to the utility immediately.
