November 10, 2022: Sheriff’s Deputy Charged With On-Duty, Unlawful Shooting of Man in East Los Angeles Last Year
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Remin Pineda has been charged with the on-duty, unlawful shooting of David Ordaz while he was on the ground outside a home in East Los Angeles last year.
“Unlawful and excessive force at the hands of police erodes the public trust and leads to further divisions between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” District Attorney Gascón said. “It is imperative that we hold law enforcement accountable when they act unlawfully. This tragic killing of Mr. Ordaz in the presence of his own family has caused tremendous harm that will reverberate for years to come.”
Pineda (dob 11/10/84) was charged yesterday in case BA510459 with one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and assault under color of authority. Arraignment will be scheduled for a later date.
On March 14, 2021, Pineda and other deputies responded to a home in East Los Angeles after the victim’s sister called authorities about Ordaz who she indicated had a knife and was suicidal.
After arriving and talking with Ordaz who was armed with a knife, two deputies fired beanbag rounds at him as he stepped toward the deputies. Ordaz then ran toward the deputies with the knife and he was shot by deputies multiple times.
After Ordaz fell to the ground, had dropped the knife and laid with his back facing the deputies, Pineda is accused of continuing to fire his handgun.
The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
