May 17, 2022: San Fernando Police Officer Charged With On-Duty Assault
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that his office charged a San Fernando police officer for assaulting a man at a gas station last summer.
“We must hold accountable police officers and protect members of the public from unjustified and excessive force by the people we entrust to protect us,” District Attorney Gascón said. “Police accountability helps us build safer and healthier communities.”
Saul Garibay (dob 1/29/69) was charged in case 2SV00104 with one misdemeanor count of assault under the color of authority. Arraignment is set for May 31 in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, San Fernando Branch.
On June 15, 2021, Garibay responded to a disturbance call at a gas station in the 1700 block of Truman Street in San Fernando. Garibay allegedly asked a man to leave the property. When the man began recording the officer with a cellphone, Garibay is accused of knocking the phone out of the man’s hand and pushing him away.
The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
