Project LEAD
Project LEAD is an effective law-related education program established by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in 1993. Prosecutors, investigators and other professional staff from the District Attorney’s Office volunteer one hour a week to teach fifth-graders about the criminal justice system.
The goal of Project LEAD is simple: To teach children that the choices they make today can affect their lives forever.
The 20-week curriculum, developed in partnership with the Constitutional Rights Foundation, focuses on the social and legal consequences of juvenile crimes, such as truancy, illicit drug use, shoplifting and graffiti. Project LEAD also teaches students techniques for resolving conflicts and resisting peer pressure. Other lessons promote tolerance and respect for diversity.
The program has been adopted by other jurisdictions throughout the U.S. and in Canada.
