June 16, 2022: District Attorney Gascón Announces Attempted Murder Charge with Firearm Allegation in Shooting of CHP Officer
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that his office filed an attempted murder of a peace officer charge with an allegation of using a firearm causing great bodily injury in Monday’s shooting of a California Highway Patrol officer.
“Based on the facts of this case, I have taken the step of authorizing the filing of a felony attempted murder charge with a gun enhancement that, if found true, could result in a sentence of 40 years to life in prison,” District Attorney Gascón said. “I believe these are appropriate charges for the person accused in the horrific shooting of a CHP officer.”
“We cannot tolerate violence against any member of our community, especially the courageous people who put their lives on the line every day to protect us,” District Attorney Gascón said. “As a former police officer, I know the dangers of police work and the many sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families. On behalf of my office, I send Officer Reyes and his family our best wishes for a speedy recovery. My office will make every victims service available to them.”
Pejhmaun Iraj Khosroabadi (dob 7/25/1988) of Van Nuys was charged with one count of willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer with an allegation of using a firearm causing great bodily injury.
Arraignment in case LA097081 is scheduled today in Department 100 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Van Nuys Branch.
The office is asking the court to hold the defendant in custody on preventative detention based on the dangerousness of the defendant and the callousness of the offense. If the judge grants the office’s request for preventative detention, it will ensure that the defendant will remain in custody pending the outcome of the trial.
Khosroabadi is charged with shooting the officer during a traffic stop in Studio City on June 13. The defendant allegedly fled and was found hours later with assistance from a police hound.
The case remains under investigation by CHP.
