January 8, 2025: Statement from District Attorney Nathan Hochman on Southern California Fires
The ongoing wildfires in Southern California continue to devastate our communities, claiming lives and displacing families. I am deeply saddened to share the tragic news of two lives lost in the Eaton Fire, which has impacted the communities of Altadena and Pasadena. This is a stark reminder of the seriousness of the situation and the need for vigilance.
Your safety remains the highest priority. Please follow evacuation orders, stay informed through official channels, and take all necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
This morning, two looters were arrested for targeting evacuation zones. Let me be clear: if you think about exploiting this crisis to steal from our residents, you will be caught, arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We will not tolerate criminal behavior that further harms our community during this difficult time.
Governor Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. All courthouses in Los Angeles County remain open for now, but court administration is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
The District Attorney’s Office is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring public safety and supporting those affected by these fires. Together, we will get through this crisis. Please stay safe, look out for one another, and adhere to all safety measures to help protect our communities.
Above all, take all necessary precautions to protect yourselves and your loved ones.
Nathan Hochman, Los Angeles County District Attorney
