LOS ANGELES — A mother has been charged with murder and felony child assault resulting in death following the killing of her 17-month-old daughter in Santa Monica.

“The allegations in this case describe extreme violence against a child who was entirely vulnerable and unable to protect herself,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “When a parent is accused of causing a child’s death, our office has a duty to act decisively and to seek the maximum accountability permitted by law.”

Carmen Anita Degregg (dob 2/1/01) is charged in case 26CJCF00125 with one count each of murder and felony assault on a child under eight causing death. Her arraignment was continued to Jan. 9 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Bail has been set at $2 million.

Around noon on Jan. 6, Santa Monica police responded to an apartment in the 2000 block of Broadway in Santa Monica and found an infant suffering from significant injuries. The child was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

If convicted as charged, Degregg faces up to 25 years to life in state prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney MacKenzie Teymouri of the Family Violence Division’s Complex Child Abuse Section and remains under investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department.

The charges filed in this case are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
