WEST COVINA, CA- Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that a man has been charged with shooting on-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Samuel Aispuro as he waited at a red light on his LASD-marked motorcycle on April 22 in the city of West Covina.

“The senseless and unprovoked shooting of Deputy Samuel Aispuro is a stark reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily,” District Attorney Gascón said. “Our office is committed to vigorously prosecuting the offender to the fullest extent of the law. Our thoughts are with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Deputy Aispuro as he recovers from this tragic incident.”

“We are extremely relieved and grateful that Deputy Aispuro has been discharged from the hospital and is now on the road to recovery,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. “The brazen actions of this career criminal have threatened public safety in our communities and underscores the urgent need to hold this coward fully accountable. Such incidents painfully remind us of the daily risks our deputies face when wearing the uniform and protecting our community.”

Raymundo Duran (dob 10/08/76) of Covina is being charged with one count of attempted murder of a peace officer; one count of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer; and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

It is further alleged that Duran intentionally discharged a firearm in the commission of the offense.

The case is being filed for warrant as Duran remains in custody in San Diego.

On April 22, 2024 at approximately 2:40 p.m., Deputy Aispuro, who was driving a marked LASD motorcycle and wearing a LASD patrol uniform, was stopped at a red light on Barranca Street and Garvey Avenue in the city of West Covina. Duran allegedly pulled up next to Deputy Aispuro’s motorcycle and shot him in the back then fled the scene.

Deputy Aispuro was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Later that evening, Duran was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after an alleged DUI in the city of San Clemente.

The People are recommending that the defendant be held without bail. If convicted as charged he faces life in prison.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
