A Norwalk man pleaded no contest yesterday for killing two people and injuring others in a DUI crash on the 605 Freeway, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Alex Barragan, 33, entered the plea to two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one felony count of driving with a .08% blood alcohol content causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense.

Deputy District Attorney Safaan Ahmed said Barragan also admitted causing great bodily injury.

As a result of the plea, the defendant was immediately sentenced to 16 years and four months in state prison.

On July 16, 2018, Barragan was driving his car on the freeway near Alondra Boulevard when he rear-ended a disabled van, the prosecutor said. The van erupted in flames, killing Atef Mishreky, 52, and Mirna Beshara, 19, as well as injuring three others, the prosecutor added.

Case VA148224 was investigated by the California Highway Patrol, Santa Fe Springs Area.
