Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that a 31-year-old man was charged today with murdering security guard Jave Garanganao outside a University of Southern California student apartment building earlier this week.

“Mr. Garanganao was just trying to do his job when he was tragically killed,” District Attorney Gascón said. “My heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends who have endured such a tremendous loss during the holiday season. My office’s Bureau of Victim Services will provide them the services and resources they need moving forward.”

Alexader Crawford (dob 5/19/91) was charged in case BA511629 with one count of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

On December 27, the defendant was allegedly trespassing at the student apartment building in the 300 block of West Adams Boulevard. The victim asked Crawford to leave and followed the defendant. Once off the property, Crawford is accused of firing a handgun and killing Garanganao.

Crawford fled the scene but was arrested a few hours later.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
