Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that a man was charged today for the attempted murder of five Arcadia police officers, his elderly mother and for critically wounding an elderly neighbor.

“Domestic disputes like these can often have fatal consequences but fortunately in this instance the victims who were shot are expected to survive,” District Attorney Gascón said. “I appreciate the bravery and unwavering dedication by officers who risk their lives every day to protect our communities.”

Nurhan Venk (dob 9/10/74) was charged in case GA112226 with five counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, one count of attempted murder with an elder abuse allegation, one count of mayhem and two counts of elder abuse.

He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department D of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pasadena Branch.

On August 10, Venk was allegedly in a dispute with his 73-year-old mother at her home in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue in Arcadia. When police arrived, the defendant is accused of opening fire at five officers. One officer was struck in the face and critically wounded.

Venk’s mother also was allegedly beaten and shot. A neighbor was struck by a stray bullet and injured as well.

All three injured parties were taken to a nearby hospital and treated.

Venk barricaded himself inside the house for about five hours before surrendering.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
