May 14, 2024: District Attorney Gascón Announces Charges Against Man in Attempted Murder of His 7-Year-Old Brother in Whittier

WHITTIER, CA- Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Cristian Gutierrez, 24, has been charged with stabbing his seven-year-old brother at their Whittier home on May 9.

“My heart goes out to this innocent child and his family during this incredibly challenging time,” District Attorney Gascón said. “The trauma and emotional impact of such an incident is immeasurable, especially when it involves a member of your own family. Our office’s goal is to ensure that the responsible individual is held accountable for their actions, and also to ensure that the vulnerable among us are protected from such harm.”

Cristian Gutierrez (dob 05/16/99) is charged in case 24DWCF00502 with one count of attempted murder.

It is further alleged that Gutierrez inflicted great bodily injury and used a knife during the commission of the crime.

Gutierrez is scheduled to be arraigned today in Dept. 3 of the Downey Courthouse.

On May 9, at approximately 10 p.m., Gutierrez allegedly stabbed his brother in their home on the 9500 block of Ben Hur Avenue in the city of Whittier. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition at that time.

The People recommend that Gutierrez be held on $1,075,000 bail.

If convicted as charged, Gutierrez faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
