Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that a man was charged today for the death of his 5-year-old son earlier this week.

“The murder of a child is something that no decent society can ever tolerate,” District Attorney Gascón said. “It is shocking to learn that a parent has allegedly inflicted this level of violence on a small helpless child. While we cannot undo this horrific tragedy, we will continue to hold those accountable who prey on the most vulnerable members of our community. The Bureau of Victim Services stands ready to aid the survivors of this tragedy in dealing with their trauma.”

Darwin Reyes (dob 9/19/89) was charged in case BA507583 with one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death.

He made his initial court appearance today and arraignment was continued to August 23 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

On July 25, police responded to a home in the 4000 block of Marathon Street and found 5-year-old Mason R. unconscious in a bathtub. The boy also had injuries to his face.

He was taken to an area hospital where he died.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
