A 31-year-old man has pleaded no contest to kidnapping his girlfriend and beating her as he fled from police last year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Alexis Leonardo Avina of Buena Park entered the plea yesterday to one felony count each of kidnapping, injuring a girlfriend and fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle and driving against traffic.

Deputy District Attorney Safaan Ahmed said Avina was immediately sentenced to six years and eight months in state prison and a 10-year protective order was issued for the victim.

Police attempted to pull Avina over after he was spotted striking his girlfriend while driving in South Gate on April 24, 2019, the prosecutor said. The pursuit continued through Orange County and then back to Los Angeles, ending in Rowland Heights.

Throughout the pursuit, the woman attempted to flee the vehicle multiple times, the prosecutor added.

Case VA150647 was investigated by the South Gate Police Department.
