LOS ANGELES – A Miramonte Elementary School teacher was charged today with three counts of lewd acts upon a child over a three-month period in 2009, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Martin Bernard Springer, 49 (dob 4-12-1962), was expected to appear for arraignment this afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court Department 30. Bail was recommended at $300,000.

Springer was arrested by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators on Feb. 3. He has been in custody since that time.

Prosecutors with the District Attorney’s Sex Crimes Division reviewed the evidence against Springer. In case No. BA 393690, Springer was charged with three felony counts of lewd act upon a child, Section 288(a) of the California Penal Code. The three counts involve one girl who was identified only as “Jane Doe” and “under the age of fourteen years.” The complaint alleged the crimes occurred in April, May and June of 2009.

If convicted, Springer faces a maximum state prison term of 12 years.

He is the second Miramonte teacher to be charged since late last month. Former teacher Mark Berndt, 61, was charged with 23 counts. His arraignment is Feb. 21 and he remains in custody in lieu of $23 million bail.
