Former Movie Grip Sentenced to
Life Prison Term for 2004 Murder,

– A former movie grip was sentenced today to 61 years to life in
prison for murdering one woman two years ago and sexually assaulting
another during a rampage that ended with capture after he jumped out
of a building in Hollywood.
Deputy District Attorney Shellie Samuels of the Major Crimes
Division said 38-year-old Paul Alan Ott was sentenced by Van Nuys
Superior Court Judge Barry A. Taylor. Taylor presided over Ott’s
jury trial that ended on May 11.
Jurors convicted Ott of the second-degree murder of Edith I. Mejia,
42, who was stabbed to death and severely beaten on Jan. 18 or 19,
2004. They also convicted him of the Jan. 19, 2004, forcible oral
copulation on a second woman on Jan. 19, 2004.
Mejia’s body was found on Jan. 19, 2004, in Ott’s SUV, which was
parked at his Van Nuys apartment building. The body was found after
the second victim, identified only as Jane Doe, escaped Ott and went

her, the prosecutor said.
A manhunt was launched after Mejia’s body was discovered. Ott was
traced to Hollywood, where he was arrested after jumping out a
second-floor window in an attempt to escape police. He was booked on
Jan. 22, 2004, and has remained in custody on $2 million bail.
