LOS ANGELES – A volunteer Boy Scout district commissioner was
charged today with possession and distribution of child pornography
following an investigation launched by a tip by an online service
company.Deputy District Attorney Marc Beaart of the High Tech
Crimes Division said Gerald Frederick Curland, 63 (dob 2-28-1945),
of Valley Village, is scheduled to appear for arraignment tomorrow
in Los Angeles Superior Court Department 30 at the Criminal Justice
Center. Curland was arrested yesterday by the Sheriff’s Department
Special Victims Unit, which investigated the case.
Curland was charged late today in case No. BA340539 with one
count each of possession and distribution of child pornography. Bail
was recommended at $40,000. If convicted of the two felony counts,
he faces a maximum term of three years and eight months in state
prison.
The Sheriff’s investigation began last year after American Online
Services notified authorities that it had captured one image of
child pornography in an E-mail attachment allegedly sent by the
defendant.
Evidence seized at the defendant’s home yesterday in connection
with a search warrant served by investigators led to the filing of
today’s case. The investigation continues as the material seized
yesterday is examined by authorities.
Beaart said the defendant is a freelance marketing consultant and
a volunteer Boy Scout district commissioner for the Cahuenga
District.
