LOS ANGELES – A Bakersfield man was charged today with the
alleged hate crime stabbing of an Asian man who was attacked last
month as he and a friend were walking on the track of a junior high
school in San Dimas.Aaron Mark Duggan, 27 (dob 9-19-1980), has
been in custody on a parole violation since shortly after the April
22 attack. A 15-year-old boy also arrested in connection with the
incident has been charged in juvenile court.
Deputy District Attorney George Castello of the Hate Crimes
Section said Duggan is charged in case No. BA 340394 with one count
of attempted murder. It was alleged the stabbing was a hate crime.
It also was alleged the defendant personally used a knife to commit
the crime.
According to the complaint, Duggan was convicted of assault in
San Luis Obispo County in September 2004 (Case No. F348121).
Castello asked the defendant be held on $1.12 million bail.
Arraignment is scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court
Department 30 on the fifth floor of the Criminal Justice Center.
If convicted, Duggan could be sentenced to life in prison with
the possibility of parole.
The 15-year-old, who remains in juvenile custody, was charged
last month with attempted murder with the hate crime allegation. He
also was charged with two counts of assault and one of battery. The
District Attorney’s Office has asked the Covina teenager be tried as
an adult. A fitness hearing on case No. KJ 31647 is scheduled for
May 23 in Pomona Juvenile Court.
The victim, 22-year-old Yoo Sun, was stabbed in the back and ear.
He was airlifted to County USC Medical Center for emergency
treatment. His companion, who also was attacked, was bruised but
suffered no stab wounds. Both men will survive their wounds.
