POMONA – A 35-year-old man was formally sentenced to death
today for the 2001 slaying of a Cal Poly Pomona student, the
District Attorney’s Office announced.
James Winslow Dixon, Jr. was convicted in March of first-degree
murder with special circumstances of kidnapping and robbery in
connection with the killing of college student Christina Burmeister.
He also was convicted of raping two women in 1996.
Pomona Superior Court Judge George Genesta upheld the
recommendation made by jurors on March 27.
Burmeister’s murder went unsolved for four years until a DNA cold
hit linked the defendant to the crime. The victim was on her way to
a party the night she disappeared. Her body was discovered the next
day.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Head Deputy John Monaghan,
Jr. and Deputy District Attorney Cathryn Brougham of Major Crimes
Division.
