LOS ANGELES – In recognition of National Victims’ Rights Week, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will honor three prosecutors and two partner agencies dedicated to providing comfort and assistance to victims of crime.

A luncheon and ceremony will take place Tuesday, April 15, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Ave., in Los Angeles.  This year’s national theme is Justice for Victims.  Justice for All.

“When justice is achieved for each individual victim, all communities are safer and all citizens have reason to believe that their government can and does perform its number one duty – protecting the people from those who would do them harm,” District Attorney Steve Cooley said.

Board of Supervisors’ Commendations will be given to Deputy District Attorneys Simone Shay of Compton Branch Office’s Victim Impact Program, Shelly Torrealba of Sex Crimes Division and Mary Murray of Family Violence Division.  The three prosecutors specialize in child abuse, sex assault and domestic violence cases.

Others recognized by the Board of Supervisors will include Children of the Night, an agency that purveys food and shelter to children forced into prostitution, and Garden of Angels – Safe Arms for Newborns, an organization that provides names and burial services for babies who die as a result of neglect or physical abuse.

More than a dozen other distinguished individuals and agencies also are slated to receive commendations from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for exemplary service to crime victims.  Award recipients were nominated by District Attorney’s Office personnel, including head deputies and Victim-Witness Assistance Program advocates.

Event sponsors include BP West Coast and the Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board, both of whom the District Attorney recognizes for giving generous contributions.  Annually, the District Attorney’s Office recognizes National Victims’ Rights Week as a time to raise public awareness about victims’ rights and services.  April also marks Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
