TORRANCE -- Charges have been filed against a 52-year-old Lawndale woman accused of embezzling more than $40,000 from the Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce, the District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Deputy District Attorney Chris Fong of Torrance Branch Office said Karen Sue Hale (dob 07/21/55), a former chamber of commerce employee, is charged in case No. YA071199 with two counts of grand theft -- for allegedly taking a laptop computer and misappropriating $41,885.63 -- and four counts of forgery.

Hale was responsible for collecting payments from chamber members and making bank deposits, according to a news release issued by the Gardena Police Department.

Hale, who is out on bail, is due to be arraigned April 24 in Dept. 4 of Torrance Superior Court.  If convicted of all counts, Hale faces a maximum state prison sentence of six years and four months.
