TORRANCE – A Gardena city councilman who resigned earlier this week was charged today with 12 felony counts stemming from allegations of child molestation.

Deputy District Attorney Beatriz Dieringer of Torrance Branch Office said Oscar Medrano, 47, (dob 12/10/60) is charged in case No. YA071056 with eight counts of lewd act upon a child under 14, one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 and three counts of lewd act upon a child 14 or 15 years old. Counts one through nine carry a special allegation that the acts committed were of substantial sexual conduct, the prosecutor said.

Medrano, who has been in custody since his arrest, is due to be arraigned March 17 at Torrance Superior Court, Dept. 4. Medrano served as a Gardena city councilman from March 2003 through March 11, 2008, at which time he resigned citing health reasons.

The victim was molested on a regular basis beginning when she was in elementary school up until age 14, the prosecutor alleged. The last count relates to an incident when the victim was 15 years old.

Medrano’s bail was recommended at $960,000.
