LOS
ANGELES – District Attorney Steve Cooley will participate in a
day-long policy summit next week for the prevention, intervention
and suppression of gender-based violence.
The summit, Ending Violence Against Women: Making it Happen in L.A.,
will be held March 12 at the California Endowment, Center for
Healthy Communities, 1000 N. Alameda St., Los Angeles.
“Domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, and other
forms of gender-based violence supersede barriers of race, age and
socioeconomic status, shattering untold lives each year,” District
Attorney Steve Cooley said. “This summit offers community
stakeholders an excellent opportunity for the exchange of ideas of
how to improve policies to better protect women.”
Roughly 280 participants are expected to attend the summit and
partake in workshops that identify factors and consequences of
gender-based violence, and look at systemic lapses in dealing with
such crime. Workshop panelists include Head Deputy District Attorney
Victoria Adams of Family Violence Division and Pamela Booth, a
Director of the D.A.'s Bureau of Branch and Area Operations, Region
II.
Cooley, one of six expert panelists, will take part in an
interactive, two-hour session in which summit participants will
present recommendations – formulated during the course of the day –
for procedure-related improvements in the provision of services to
victims and survivors.
Other panelists include leadership from the California Assembly, the
California State Commission on the Status of Women and the Los
Angeles Police Department. News Anchor Jan Stevens of KFWB will
moderate the panel.
The summit is sponsored by Soroptimist International, Los Angeles;
Zonta International, District 9; American Association of University
Women, California; and Business and Professional Women,
International. ___________________________________________________
