PASADENA – An Alhambra man accused of killing his
2-year-old foster daughter was convicted today by a Pasadena
Superior Court jury.
Jurors deliberated for one day before convicting Armando Abundis,
Sr., 35, of one count of assault on a child under the age of eight
causing death. Though declared not guilty of second-degree murder,
the jury found Abundis guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary
manslaughter and one count of child abuse with a special allegation
found true of causing great bodily injury or death.
Judge Teri Schwartz ordered Abundis, who was free on bail,
remanded into custody with no bail. The defendant is due back in
court April 28 for sentencing. He faces 25 years to life in prison.
Deputy District Attorney Franco Baratta prosecuted the case with
co-counsel Louis Parise.
In October 2005, Abundis and his wife, Frances Abundis, were
charged with inflicting injuries on their foster child resulting in
her death. The complaint alleged that the child was assaulted
sometime between Oct. 10 and Oct. 11, when she died.
