A 22-year-old man was sentenced today to eight years in state prison for driving under the influence of alcohol and crashing his car into another vehicle, killing a couple, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On April 4, Andrew Vincente Simbana-Nunez pleaded guilty to two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in case VA143310.

The defendant also admitted a special allegation that he committed great bodily injury and death to more than one victim during the commission of the crime.

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Bowlin, who prosecuted the case, said on the night of June 21, 2016, Simbana-Nunez was under the influence of alcohol when he drove into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into another vehicle near Paramount Boulevard and Frankel Street in Lakewood.

Brian Urquia, 30, and Rosanna Williams, 28, a newly engaged couple, immediately died in the crash, the prosecutor said. The defendant was arrested at the scene.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
