A jury today found a Whittier man guilty of first-degree murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Don Syn said the jury deliberated for about two days before finding Jose Antonio Barrios, 22, guilty of fatally shooting Robert Christopher Guerrero. They also found true a special allegation that the defendant personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury and death.

Barrios is scheduled to be sentenced on March 21 at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Norwalk branch before Judge Patrick T. Meyers. He faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in state prison.

The prosecutor said the victim and defendant were former friends who had a falling out over a woman and money.

On Feb. 1, 2013, Guerrero and Barrios happened to run into each other at a Stater Bros. market. The two men got into the victim’s truck, Syn said, and drove to a residential area where Barrios shot Guerrero three times.

Barrios then pushed the victim out of the car and drove away in Guerrero’s vehicle. Authorities later located the victim’s car about two blocks away from the defendant’s home, Syn said.

On May 15, Barrios was arrested by authorities in connection with the killing.

The case was investigated by the Whittier Police Department.
