Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Destenee Sheree Scipio and Reshawn Jonae Strother were charged in the drive-by shooting that killed a child, and injured another.

"These two individuals stand accused of a heinous act of violence that shattered the lives of innocent children. With callous disregard for human life, they allegedly orchestrated an attack that claimed the life of the 12-year-old boy and left a 14-year-old girl wounded,” District Attorney Gascón said. “Today, we begin the process of holding them accountable for their actions. We will seek justice for the victims, their families, and our community, as we strive to ensure that such senseless acts of violence have no place in our society.”

Destenee Sheree Scipio (dob 11/07/01) and Reshawn Jonae Strother (dob 09/01/02) were charged in case NA122155. Scipio is charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of conspiracy to commit a crime. Strother is charged with one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder, one count of conspiracy to commit a crime, one count of unlawful firearm activity, one count of carrying a loaded firearm, and one count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm.

It is further alleged that Strother personally used a handgun.

The defendants are expected in court for their preliminary hearing on July 21 in Department S17 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

Investigators say on March 9, 2023, Strother, Scipio and an unnamed third individual allegedly drove to the area of Hill Street and Lewis Avenue in Long Beach where they fired numerous shots at three victims, killing a boy and wounding a girl.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
