October 28, 2014: Sunland Man Charged with Murder for Fatal Street Race

A Sunland man was charged today with murder for the death of a 38-year-old woman who crashed her car during a street race, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Luis Tamayo Tapia (dob 11/9/85) faces one count of murder in case PA082338.

Arraignment is scheduled this afternoon in Department S of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, San Fernando Branch.

On Oct. 24, Claudia Perez was killed when her car hit a tree while she was engaged in a speed contest with Tapia, prosecutors said.

The recommended bail is $1 million.

If convicted as charged, Tapia faces a maximum possible sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by Los Angeles Police Department, Valley Traffic Division.
