October 14, 2014: Son Charged With Fatally Stabbing Elderly Mother in Torrance

A 47-year-old man pleaded not guilty today to charges that he fatally stabbed his elderly mother in Torrance last month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. 

Rudy DeCasas (dob 11/22/66) is facing one count of murder in case YA091230 as well as a special allegation of personal use of a weapon, a knife. He was arraigned today and is scheduled to return to a Torrance courtroom on Nov. 19 for preliminary hearing setting. 

Deputy District Attorney Tony Cho of the Elder Abuse Section said the defendant killed his 69-year-old mother Rafaela DeCasas on Sept. 20 at his Torrance apartment. DeCasas, along with his brother, had been taking care of his mother who had numerous health issues, the prosecutor said. 

The defendant’s wife had just returned home from work when she discovered the victim’s body in a bedroom. DeCasas also was in the apartment with an injury to his neck, the prosecutor added. 

If convicted, DeCasas faces a possible maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison. 

The case remains under investigation by the Torrance Police Department.
