A 55-year-old man was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison for trying to kidnap a 13-year-old girl who was walking to school in Rancho Palos Verdes, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Garrett Evans Webber of Rancho Palos Verdes pleaded no contest on Nov. 29 to one felony count of attempted kidnapping of a victim under age 14 in a negotiated plea agreement before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Hector M. Guzman. Webber also admitted that he personally used a semi-automatic firearm.

On Oct. 30, 2017, Webber drove up to the victim as she walked in the 28700 block of Highridge Road, exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at her head, trying to force her into his vehicle, according to court testimony. The young victim was able to escape the defendant’s grasp and call for help from a woman who was driving in the area.

The good Samaritan was able to get the defendant’s license plate and Webber was later located by police.

Case YA097132 was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Lomita Station.
